5. Daiquiris get a Chicago makeover

Think back to the last time you wore a plastic lei—on spring break or a cruise ship, perhaps? Chances are, you also were drinking a frozen pink daiquiri with enough sugar to make you twitch. The daiquiri, which historically was a three-ingredient mix of rum, lime juice and sugar, has over the last few decades lost sight of its roots as a simple, sweet-tart refresher. But a recent trend toward pared-down, fewer-ingredient cocktails means more Chicago bartenders are rediscovering the tropical drink's origins. "In America, you think of a daiquiri and you think of a slushie machine. It was kind of bastardized in the '80s by Chili's and TGI Fridays," said Justin Anderson, beverage manager at Fulton Market's South American-inspired restaurant La Sirena Clandestina. "But really, you can have very simple ingredients and make a great daiquiri." Though they're ditching sugar-loaded mixes in favor of fresh limes and high-quality rum, bars aren't all serving up the same riff on the drink. From classic presentations to habanero- and watermelon-flavored versions, allow the daiquiri to reintroduce itself. kbernot@tribune.com | @redeyeeatdrink

  7. Sophisticated food at MoonShine Tavern in Canton

Based on its name, you might think MoonShine Tavern is strictly a place that's good for shots and not much else. And while it does deliver on the shots — its moonshine menu is a mile long — with a talented kitchen staff offering sophisticated twists on casual Southern food, Boston Street's newest addition deserves a closer look.

  21. June is the Month For Strawberry Festivals in Connecticut

Despite Mother Nature's best efforts, the summer growing season is fighting its way into existence. Its first gift to us is the almighty strawberry, the first berry of the summer and a versatile ingredient in the kitchen. While some like to toss a few strawberry slices to lighten up a salad, we all know its true magic is in the desserts. Strawberry shortcake and strawberry syrup and strawberry jam and strawberry rhubarb pie and oh so many more possibilities from one little red berry. Two of the really popular cakes at Julia's Bakery (Christmas Tree Plaza, 220 Indian River Road, Orange, (203) 799-7106) are made with strawberries, says general manager Jennifer Montgomery. They can make their strawberry shortcake two ways, either open faced (a more traditional style), or like a birthday cake with the strawberries on the inside. The bungalow cake, which is a layer a vanilla cake, a layer of chocolate cake, and fresh bananas and strawberries, is popular all year 'round. "The seasons have been a little strange for fruit, but we've been able to have fresh fruit in our cakes," Montgomery says.
