  1. Obama's search for greatness should begin with unity . . .

          Greatness is a tough gig.  Now that President  Obama has been sworn in for a second term, people are asking what he wants his legacy to be.  Perhaps Obama asks himself:  How will people remember me?  This "me" component is alien to greatness and...

  3. 'Top Chef Seattle' recap, Battle before the war

    We are greeted with another sunny Seattle morning, as the chefs debrief on the prior elimination. Josh confesses he isn’t the least bit disappointed in John Tesar’s departure, while Stefan is shown looking despondently off on the horizon as he smokes alone on the balcony. Maybe it’s just that he lost his one smoking buddy. Meanwhile, Josie bellows “Asians represent!” and attempts to high five Kristen and Sheldon, who shrug her off like a bad cold.

  7. At Canter's, a new menu with fancy cocktails, gluten-free bagels

    L.A. NOW
    Canter's deli, which opened in Boyle Heights in 1931 and moved to the Fairfax District in 1953, was once primarily a place of corned beef and pastrami. But since the 1990s, the menu has shifted with the tastes of the diner's customers, making it a sort of...

    <img src="http://interactive.sun-sentinel.com/images/restaurantstars/3stars.gif" alt="" />
    Josh Marcus is single-handedly returning Jewish deli food to its roots. Homemade. Artisanal. Not produced in some commissary and reheated like much of today's deli fare. He cures his own salmon and his own pastrami in a 14-day process. He makes pickles,...

  23. Weekend preview: End of the world? Santa to the rescue!

    Lotta talk these days about Bolon Yokte, the Mayan god in charge of bad things, including war, conflict, the underworld and &ldquo;Gangnam Style.&rdquo; It is Yokte, as he is known among the wags knocking &rsquo;em back most nights at Red&rsquo;s in Wilton Manors, who will be coming down to end the world on Friday. But as he will freely admit after a few VRBs (they were having conversations about Yokte in 635 A.D., so, yeah, he needs to hit the Stoli-double-Red Bull pretty hard), it&rsquo;s not going to happen. Apparently, the world will continue to exist on Saturday because Yokte, great god of the 12-21-12 cataclysm, is no match for the powers of &hellip; Santa. Yokte refuses to get into specifics &mdash; he still hopes to end the world at some point &mdash; but hinted the other night that the only thing saving the planet is the unifying belief in St. Nick. &ldquo;Will Ferrell doesn&rsquo;t know how right he got it in &lsquo;Elf,&rsquo; &rdquo; Yokte says. &ldquo;I love Will Ferrell, by the way. I&rsquo;ll really hate to end him.&rdquo;
