  1. Top Ten essentials to farmers market-worthy falafel

    Dining@Large
I had to work Saturday, which was kind of a bummer but for one thing: I had a morning assignment around the corner from the Waverly Farmers Market. With any luck, I could swing by before returning to the office......

  3. Giuliano Bugialli, Dan Rodricks' carrot guru, comes to WYPR

    Dining@Large
My colleague Dan Rodricks sends news of a cooking teacher, lecturer and author who will be on Dan's WYPR radio show, Midday, at 1 p.m. Tuesday. His name is Giuliano Bugialli, and Dan can personally vouch for the guy's way......

  5. And now for something completely unpolitical: beets

    Dining@Large
OK, OK, you want nothing but food. I offer a favorite recipe. It happens to involve beets, but any resemblance to topical subjects, including presidential root-vegetable bias, is purely coincidental.I used to have the same opinion of beets as a......

  7. Give mom a little herb for Mother's Day

Mother's Day is just a week away and people everywhere are struggling to think of the right gift. For the right price, of course.
Mother's Day is just a week away and people everywhere are struggling to think of the right gift. For the right price, of course. The holiday presents a dilemma for a cheapster. You want to spend just enough to show mom you love her, and not a penny...

  9. The very surprising M.F.K. Fisher

M.F.K. Fisher had a way of surprising people. Take the name, for instance. Hiding behind those genderless initials stood a woman. That was a shocker in the 1930s. For anyone who could write so confidently and exult in a subject so base as food had to be a man, maybe a "frail young don from Oxford" or so her first publishers hoped.

  11. Rise and shine

The early mom gets a quiet cup of coffee. Which should be reward enough, but it isn't. I usually succumb to the snooze button.
The early mom gets a quiet cup of coffee. Which should be reward enough, but it isn't. I usually succumb to the snooze button. Still, I'm impressed by early. The friend who wakes predawn to work. Or worse, work out. The quick-study who files early. Or...

  13. Taste of Morocco

Morocco dropped by. I wasn't expecting a North African kingdom, but company is always welcome. Especially such charming company — those cinnamon-warm spices, those lush stews and that habit of pressing savory against sweet. Intoxicating.

  15. Dressing with a fruity twist

This is a very straightforward dressing mix that has avocado blended into the ingredients. It adds a delightful creaminess to the dressing and some healthful fats, as well.  Choose large ripe avocados or your recipe will have issues. Under ripen will be...

  17. From the ordinary, extraordinary

We recently located the "off" switch on the television. Normally I have trouble operating the "on" switch.
We recently located the "off" switch on the television. Normally I have trouble operating the "on" switch. Which is why I confine my viewing to times when I find the younger generation cemented to the couch cushions, eyeballs epoxied to the set. I stand...

  19. Beef brisket wanted

Q: A good friend of mine is seeking a recipe for beef brisket which she had cut out last year but now has lost.  It was a good one and she wants to make it for a special event this weekend.   She says the recipe ran last year and ran about the time of a Jewish holiday; was a lead piece in the section.  Would appreciate any help you can give. She is an avid reader of the Tribune's food section.

  21. Learning to like liver

Adults like strange things — smelly cheese, strong drinks, dull movies. They like liver. Despite the obvious: It's awful.
