3. Make your own Baconfest

Bacon dumplings. Bacon pie. Bacon tacos. Bacon cotton candy. These are just a few of the smoky, salty treats that local chefs plan to serve at Baconfest Chicago this weekend. Unfortunately, the lure of these pork-packed dishes proved so great that the event sold out the same day tickets went on sale. If you're not among the fortunate few that will be stuffing yourself silly at the UIC Forum on Saturday, you still can get your fix. These restaurants are serving the same or similar Baconfest dishes—but for a limited time, so don't wait too long. Find even more options on Baconfest's own Do-It-Yourself Baconfest Guide at baconfestchicago.com.

Tiffany Deli opened with a resolve to create their own niche along Winter Park's Park Avenue
For 40 years, Brandywine's was a go-to place for lunch on Winter Park's Park Avenue. The no-frills deli had an enduring appeal that attracted all ages and all walks of life. When the doors closed last April because of a lease dispute, I was one of the...

11. Chicago shops for the eco-conscious

Let’s face it: when it comes to going green, a lot of us are, well, a little green—especially with regards to shopping. Manufacturers say one thing, but oftentimes they do another. “The abundance of green-washing is tragic,” says Elsa Jacobson, regional director of the Chicago Green Festival. “Oftentimes, only part of the story is told with clever product descriptions.”

17. The Szabo's Food Truck Dispenses Some Serious Seafood

Once spring rolls around, the warm weather nuts start getting super antsy for summer and all of the good things that come with it: enjoying the outdoors, the food and the drinks, hitting up the beach, etc. Here in Connecticut, summertime food goes beyond burgers and hotdogs, potato salad and popsicles. We've got all the fried seafood we could ever dream of. Thanks to the Szabo family, you don't have to wait till a weekend trip to the shoreline to get your fix. The Szabo family has many years of experience in the seafood industry, with a little storefront prepared-foods shop on Howe Avenue in Shelton, and Dan Szabo's life-long experience with seafood and perfecting his family's recipes. Now they're broadening the reach of their deliciousness with their roving Little Red Truck, serving up lobster rolls ($13), fried shrimp ($10) and clam strips ($7), chowders ($5 for New England, $4.50 for Manhattan) and lobster bisque ($7.50), burgers ($7 sirloin or $8 salmon, tuna or swordfish) and more to New Haven's hungry lunchtime crowd. All items come with french fries and coleslaw.

23. Dining Review: Four Café's spring menu satisfies

Four Café in Eagle Rock feels a little like walking into a pal's kitchen. (OK, if your pal had a glass dessert case and a cash register right by the kitchen door.) The vibe is friendly and relaxed and the locavore food is worth lingering over.
