1. Best meals of 2011

The best meals of the year aren't necessarily about foie gras and truffles, or indulgent tasting menus, or even the technically best cooking of 2011. They're those dinners that surprised and delighted, that wove food and wine and friendship together in a meal that stands crisp and clear in memory.

  3. Sweet side of the new 4 Rivers Smokehouse in Longwood

When it comes to 4 Rivers Smokehouse, I am a burnt-end sandwich ($6.99) girl with baked cheese grits and corn bread salad on the side. Or smoked jalepenos. Or green beans. Or fried pickles. Well, you get the idea. Add a self-serve unsweet iced tea and life is pretty good.

  9. Recipe: Dulce de leche cookies

"This recipe is kind of a mash-up between my mom and me. My mom makes dulce de leche every year, the real stuff, you cook it forever and reduce it down. It's a candy that's really popular in Mexico. And I just thought, what if I didn't cook it quite as long and then used that as a filling? So she had the dulce de leche and I had the cookie, and this is what we came up with. It's something we make every Christmas. I stand around and chat with my mom and my aunts, and we cook and stir and stir and stir. There's no shortcuts and no cheating. My mom wouldn't allow that."

  11. Unique gourmet gifts for chocolate fanatics

As a last-minute shopper who hates to shop, getting in the holiday spirit isn't easy. An inspiring environment is essential. At the Westport Winter Farmers Market at Gilberties Herb Garden (Thursdays 10 a.m. to noon), I found it. The evocative fresh scent of evergreen boughs sets the mood, and the market greenhouse is so sunny that even someone with SAD will feel happy. And buying from local, artisan producers supports an economy I believe in.
