1. The talk of Thai Town

Amound of fragrant jasmine rice arrives at the table piled high with a montage of slivered green mango, sliced lemon grass, finely cut green beans, bean sprouts, cucumbers and shredded carrots and cabbage. It's sprinkled with julienned kaffir lime leaves, ground dried shrimp and chile powder and served with a small bowl of sweet-salty budu sauce and a wedge of lime. The hostess comes to the table and with a large spoon tosses the whole fabulous salad together, telling you that her naam budu is made in-house with anchovies, herbs, lemon grass and garlic, and that you have to use all of the sauce that's given to you, along with a squeeze or two of lime, to get the right balance of flavor.

  3. Restaurant review: La Pupusa Loca in Hollywood

A long, manically cheerful mural on one of the walls at Salvadoran restaurant La Pupusa Loca re-imagines Los Angeles as a mostly empty, grass-filled valley, with nothing but one church, one school and one lone strip mall, housing La Pupusa Loca.

  15. Citified rustic

The word "rustic," when applied to a restaurant, conjures up visions of hearty, homey dishes and rough wooden tables drawn up in front of a fire where sausages or birds cook over the embers. You certainly don't expect a place with the distinctly urban vibe of the new Rustic Canyon Wine Bar and Seasonal Kitchen in Santa Monica. The 3-month-old restaurant sits on Wilshire Boulevard at 11th Street, with big picture windows that look out on a streetscape of resale shops and boutiques, not some swatch of bucolic countryside.
