WASHINGTON – Efforts to confirm Chuck Hagel as the nation’s new secretary of Defense hit another roadblock Thursday, with Senate leaders saying a vote to move forward with his nomination could be delayed in the face of a “full-scale filibuster” on the part of Republicans.

  5. Is GOP abusing filibuster in blocking nominee for defense secretary?

Senate Republicans used a filibuster to block a confirmation vote Thursday on Chuck Hagel, President Obama’s nominee for defense secretary. Harry Reid, the Senate’s Democratic leader, said it was the first time a nominee for the Pentagon’s top job had been filibustered. Democrats control 55 votes in the Senate, more than the majority that would be needed to confirm Hagel, but not the 60 votes needed to prevent a minority from blocking an up-or-down tally. Republicans said they were holding up Hagel’s confirmation because the Obama administration was refusing to release more information on the Sept. 11 terrorist attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi. Democrats said Republicans were just looking for excuses to continue the GOP’s strategy of obstruction. Have Republicans been abusing the filibuster? Or should Democrats be blamed for pushing nominees and proposals that don’t have enough bipartisan support to pass? Talk about it!

  7. Real questions for Hagel and Brennan

Whether Chuck Hagel and John Brennan are the ideal men to lead the Pentagon and CIA remains to be seen. We need the exercise of a through vetting in Senate confirmation hearings, and certainly an examination of the nominees' past statements and actions is warranted. But the objections raised about Mr. Hagel so far, and to a lesser extent, Mr. Brennan, sound a lot more like an attempt to score political points than an effort to get at the key questions that will face the leaders of two of the nation's most crucial agencies.
