1. Obama better choice in dangerous times

It has been 50 years this month since the Cuban missile crisis, but I remember the terror of it. We were hours away from six missiles, each with the strength of eighty Hiroshima bombs, being launched against the eastern seaboard before Nikita Khrushchev...

  3. Savage Love: Bible Bondage

I'm pro-choice. The anti-choice position — particularly the dumb contention that "personhood" begins when sperm hits egg — is illogical and unappealing. It's not the most unappealing quality I can think of in a partner, though — that would probably be dishonesty. Your advice last week to the young woman who discovered that her boyfriend is anti-choice was terrible. You advised LIFE to tell her boyfriend that she's pregnant in order to see if that changes his position. If a woman told me she was against abortion in all circumstances, I would think twice about dating her. If she told me she was pregnant and asked me to support the child, and then told me that she was just seeing how I would react, I would dump her.

  5. The Republican case for same-sex marriage

Marylanders have an important decision to make this Election Day: whether or not to affirm their belief in the traditional American principle of equal rights for all, or instead to continue a system of special rights for some. A "yes" vote on Question 6 would sustain the Maryland legislature's recent historic vote that gave gay and lesbian couples to same right to marry as heterosexuals. A "no" vote would repeal marriage equality, perpetuating the unequal system of granting all the legal privileges and perks of marriage to heterosexual couples only.

  7. Movie review: 'The Campaign'

Talk about your undecided voters. The new Will Ferrell/Zach Galifianakis vehicle "The Campaign" can't make up its mind about dumb versus smart, crass versus crass with a conscience, or cheap caricature versus satire stoked by a sincere call to action. Comedies with something to say often go about saying it a dozen different ways, but this intended skewering of lowball politics and America's corrosive cynicism regarding our elected officials, and how they got that way, struggles to film a cheap sight gag to decent effect.

  13. MAYBERRY UNDER SEIGE: Ramped-up debate security gives Danville new look, feel

Danville recently won accolades from a website for being among the Top 10 Mayberry-like towns in America, and it’s not too difficult to see the parallels that connect that bucolic TV town of the 1960s to our fair city’s station in 2012.

  23. Savage Love: Fair Question

I was wondering what you think about the Folsom Street Fair, the annual gay leather/fetish/BDSM street fair in San Francisco. Do you think it is still a socially relevant display? Or do you think that in this time when we are fighting for civil rights and equality that it does more harm than good?
