17. How could 31 Senators vote against debating expanded background checks?

How could it be that even a single U.S. senator — no matter how opposed to gun control — could vote to hold up consideration of a proposal to require background checks for gun purchases? 19. Should Senate OK background checks deal?

Two U.S. senators, Democrat Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Republican Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania, unveiled a compromise Wednesday to subject more gun buyers to criminal background checks. Currently the checks only apply to sales from licensed dealers, which leaves out up to 40 percent of transactions. The compromise would extend the requirement to sales by unlicensed dealers at gun shows and online, but not cover “temporary” transfers or sales between family and friends. Support for the compromise could doom chances for a GOP-led filibuster to block a Senate debate on new gun restrictions. Should senators OK the compromise? Does it go far enough, or too far? Would it make Americans safer? Talk about it!
