3. Why not a tax on bicycles?

Maryland is faced with major fiscal issues that are restricting its ability to repair and expand its aging highway infrastructure. At the urging of Gov. Martin O'Malley, the Maryland legislature recently passed an increase in the state gasoline tax to address this problem ("Md. Senate approves increase in gas tax," March 30).

  7. Martin O'Malley does not spend money responsibly

Taking advice from Martin O'Malley on responsible spending is like asking for a diet plan from Two-Ton Tony ("Where's the beef in the budget cuts Gov. O'Malley keeps talking about?" April 7). Since he has taken office all he has done is raise taxes, raise fees and spend money. Let look at his last five budgets. In 2008 he spent $29.4 billion. 2009: $30.7 billion. 2010: $32.2 billion. 2011: $32.0 billion, and in 2012: $34.2 billion. Recently, he received approval with his 33rd and 34th tax increases when the legislature approved his $3 billion spending plan for roads and transit. Added to all of his previous hikes, the higher fuel taxes and fees will mean that the citizens of Maryland will have spent $15.5 billion more in taxes and fees over the five years of his administration.

  9. What's left for O'Malley?

The knock on Gov. Martin O'Malley by his critics is that everything he does is an effort to pad his resume for a presumed run for president. The latest evidence: He enacted Maryland's most sweeping gun control measures in a generation, abolished the death penalty, secured the most significant boost in state transportation funding since the Schaefer administration, laid the groundwork for a wind farm off the Ocean City coast, passed legislation that will make it easier for veterans to get jobs and for the government to partner with private industry on major projects, and effectively eliminated the gap between projected revenues and expenses that has dogged Maryland for the last decade.

  15. Remember gas tax in 2014

Looks like our "tax and spend" Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley had his way again ("Md. Senate approves increase in gas tax," March 30). The Maryland Senate passed Governor O'Malley's massive 80 percent gasoline tax hike over Easter weekend. Now,...

  17. Maryland's finances aren't so rosy
