Dining@Large
The #8 at Chick and Ruth's Deli is the William Donald Schaefer - salami, swiss, and sliced onion on rye. Ted Levitt, who now runs his father's storied Annapolis eatery, gathering spot, said that Schaefer eventually switched to another sandwich,......

3. Table Talk: Election could mean menu change at Chick & Ruth's

It's less than two weeks until Election Day. In Maryland, you can take any printed material — including your marked specimen ballot — to help you vote. I'd like to think there are some Annapolitans who take in a copy of the specialty sandwich menu from Chick & Ruth's Delly.

Harry R. Hughes, governor of Maryland, 1979-1987
Harry R. Hughes, governor of Maryland, 1979-1987 "Our interactions were not always friendly; that is putting it mildly. … I still call him the mayor. I think most people do. … He really loved Baltimore. I don't think he ever got over that....

7. Schaefer to be taken on 'final tour' of city before being laid to rest

9. In Annapolis, crowd lines up to pay respects to Schaefer

From late morning to afternoon, images of a man with many hats and faces rolled by on the big TV monitor in the State House main hall: William Donald Schaefer in full white chef's garb, done up as George Washington crossing the Delaware, wearing a cowboy hat, gesturing with a pointed finger and the customary intensity. The people who gathered around had known him close up or from afar as a constant presence in Maryland politics.

11. The lessons of Schaefer

Among the many observations made about William Donald Schaefer since his death on Monday, one of the most common has been the lament that we don't have leaders like him anymore. It's certainly true; with all due respect to our current crop of elected officials, none of them has anything close to his legacy. Maybe he was one of a kind, and maybe he was a product of circumstances that cannot (and perhaps should not) be repeated. Nonetheless, Mr. Schaefer's remarkable career offers plenty of lessons to those who aspire to leave an imprint on the state like the one he did. Here are a few tips to politicians looking for the secret of his success:

17. Will referendum be final word on Md. slots? Don't bet on it

19. In their debt

Willie Mae White began worrying how she'd pay the $36,224 bill from Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center a few weeks after having emergency brain surgery. She lived off Social Security and food stamps after decades working as a housekeeper. So she was thrilled when Bayview informed her in writing that her bill would be forgiven, at least in part. The hospital had little to lose, since it can recover its costs of free and unpaid care under a unique state program. Instead, the hospital sued her 15 months later to collect the bill. Fearing she'd lose her Waverly rowhouse and too sick to defend herself in court, she agreed to pay $500 right away plus $50 a month. At that rate, it would have taken her 59 years to get out of debt.
