Michael Steele is the former lieutenant governor of Maryland under Gov. Robert Ehrlich. Steele became lieutenant governor in 2003 and served until 2007 when Gov. Martin O'Malley was elected. Steele ran for the U.S. Senate in 2006 for a seat being vacated by Paul Sarbanes, but lost to Ben Cardin. Steele was a candidate for chair of the Republican National Committee in 2009.
