  1. Appearances matter, your honor

Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake's trip with her family to the beach house of lobbyist Lisa Harris Jones during Memorial Day weekend may have been exactly what she claims — two friends getting together ("Friends in high places," June 14). However, as an elected official, the mayor needs to understand that appearances matter, and spending a weekend with one of the biggest lobbyists in the city, no matter how long you have been friends, just does not appear correct.

  5. Rawlings-Blake must not have gotten Obama's memo on lobbyists

I guess Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake didn't get the memo from her party's leader, President Barack Obama in 2008, that he was going to put a stop to lobbyist influence in government ("The mayor and the lobbyist," June 14). But now that the NSA is keeping phone records of millions of Americans, all we need to do is have one of the groups that fight against corruption in government to subpoena the mayor's and the lobbyist's phone records to determine how many times the mayor has called the lobbyist and how many times the lobbyist has called the mayor.

  9. Building middle-class Baltimore

In passing Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake's budget Monday night, City Council members said they hoped the whole thing would be more or less a wash for Baltimore residents. Property taxes are going down, but new fees are coming to pay for stormwater pollution mitigation, and new taxes will hit billboard advertising and taxi rides. No doubt some residents will pay more, and some will pay less, and in a city where poverty and joblessness are persistent problems, such changes are inevitably fraught. Likewise, the mayor's proposal to increase salaries for civilian city employees while also forcing them to contribute to their pension for the first time appears not to be a sure thing in the council amid worries that it asks too much of workers who occupy some of the lower rungs of the municipal pay scale.

Does anyone remember the political ad telling voters a fee was the same as a tax? An African-American woman was featured saying: "If it comes out of my pocket, it's a tax."
