  1. Danville native Frank X Walker installed as poet laureate

FRANKFORT — Frank X Walker kept his eyes downcast or closed Wednesday as he listened closely to the words of his predecessors as Kentucky poet laureate echo off the granite in the rotunda of the state Capitol. His head nodded in appreciation when a particular turn of phrase struck his fancy.

  7. Dropout issue goes way beyond age limit

Upon reading about the legislators changing the age that students may leave school from 16 to 18, several memories came to mind because I spent 25 years working with students as a teacher and then working for students as an administrator.  It is admirable that Governor Steve Beshear and his wife want to help students secure their future by graduating from high school. In my role as the last one to see those who were dropping out as I signed their dropout paper, I believe it will not eliminate all student dropouts. If it helps some, then it is worth the time and effort.

  15. A CONSTANT REMINDER: Blue ribbons symbolize continued fight against child abuse in Kentucky

By now most people have likely driven by at least one display of bundled blue pinwheels or ribbons. If just one person has wondered what they are all about, then the symbols have served their purpose.
