  3. A genuine freedom fighter heads for peril in Libya — again

On Friday, the Lehigh Valley's gutsiest freedom fighter will once again head for Libya, his native land. He was there when the monstrous Moammar Gadhafi took power in a 1969 coup, he was there for the first eight years of Gadhafi's rule, resisting the...

  7. The long hike from an Iranian prison to home

Two years ago, Californian and citizen of the world Sarah Shourd was released from prison in Iran after an intense international campaign to free her. A bit more than a year later, that effort, including pressure from the State Department, Oman (the "Switzerland of the Middle East") and even Iraq and Venezuela, also won the release of Shourd's then-fiance, Shane Bauer, and their friend, Josh Fattal. The three Americans had been hiking in 2009 in Iraqi Kurdistan when they were snatched at the Iranian border and accused of spying. Ever since, in jail and out, they've been in the world's spotlight. They'll tell their story in a book next year — and here, as Shourd marks her second anniversary of freedom.

    The Hartford Courant
The 14-minute Internet trailer "The Innocence of Muslims" that set off a storm of violence in Libya and Egypt was a low-quality, second-rate production that was difficult to watch because it was so amateurish. The film's history remains confused, but...

  15. Rachel Marsden: Is Putin the Russian Reagan?

It would seem that we're now at the stage of global economic lunacy where the worldwide socialist slide is so far gone that the president of Russia is lecturing the world, and particularly Europe, about the risks of socialism.

LIJIN China — Six months pregnant, 38-year-old Ma Jihong was healthy and fit, her body toned from working in the cotton fields. So when 10 people from the local family planning office showed up one morning in October, she slipped through a gap in the concrete wall around the house and bolted like a sprinter toward the main road.
