  1. Mailbag: The intersection of assault rifles, mental illness

As someone in favor of strong gun-safety regulations, surprisingly I find myself in total agreement with Wayne LaPierre of the NRA. I agree with him that the manufacture, sale and possession of assault-type weapons with large ammunition clips should not...

  3. Try convincing the survivors we're safer with armed citizens

The moment that most deserves to be remembered from Sunday's thrilling Super Bowl came before the game, when Jennifer Hudson joined students from the Sandy Hook Elementary School in singing "America the Beautiful." It was a heart-rending elegy for the...

  5. No easy answers for gun woes

Unlike the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in Connecticut, the horrific death of Hadiya Pendleton last week might not have been enough all by itself to spark U.S. Senate hearings on gun violence.
Unlike the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in Connecticut, the horrific death of Hadiya Pendleton last week might not have been enough all by itself to spark U.S. Senate hearings on gun violence. Yet the urban teenager's tragic case is sadly far...

  7. Chan Lowe: Wayne LaPierre and the NRA leadership

Not only the American people, but also the rank and file of the NRA are being done a disservice by the absolutist position of the organization’s executive VP, Wayne LaPierre. His testimony in Congress was a shining example of paranoia on parade. That, and a pretty serious exaggeration of his own fighting ability.

  13. The NRA's loose cannon

It would be wrong to base one's judgments about politicians too heavily on their gaffes. Public speakers are exposed to microphones so often that it would be shocking if the occasional boneheaded remark didn't slip out. But in the case of National Rifle Assn. Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre, the achingly incongruous statements tend not to come from off-the-cuff remarks but carefully vetted prepared statements.
