  1. Buzz of the Melvins talks Redd Kross and NYE at the Alexandria

On Monday night at the Alexandria Hotel in downtown Los Angeles, punk bands the Melvins and Redd Kross will team up to greet 2013 with volume, riffs and (hopefully) a few drum solos. The hotel, which in its prime played host to luminaries including Woodrow Wilson, Charlie Chaplin, Greta Garbo and Mae West, features a gorgeous ballroom, which is where the bands will play. We caught up with the Melvins' Buzz Osborne via email to ask him about the gig.

  3. After the Arab Spring

The most enduring image from my travels across the Middle East this year was a Libyan street lined with bridal boutiques. Mannequins in bouffant white dresses, with beaded bustiers and satin rosettes, evoked Cinderella transformed by her ball gown.

  7. Plant stands grew as house decorations

    KIng Features Syndicate
Starting in about 1885, plants were among the decorations in a house because central heating kept homes — and plants — warm in the winter, and glass windows let light into most homes. Only a small group of plants were popular, partly because...

  17. When Baltimore was convention central

This summer, the Republican and Democratic parties will hold their presidential nominating conventions in Tampa, Fla., and Charlotte, N.C. In so doing, they will continue a political ritual that began 180 years ago in Baltimore. From their inception in the campaign of 1832 and continuing through the Civil War, Baltimore was the city of choice for conventions, hosting a dozen, compared to only two each for its closest competitors. The last 19th-century convention to be held in Baltimore was in 1872. By then, with the population shifting westward, conventions moved primarily to Midwestern cities, particularly Chicago.
