  23. Richard L. "Smokey" Merrill, 68, Ligonier

    Richard L. "Smokey" Merrill, 68, Ligonier, died July 16, 2012 at Latrobe Hospital. Born September 3, 1943 in Somerset, son of Charles and Elizabeth “Libby” (Lehman) Merrill. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Sue Merrill, and son and daughter, Maximilian and Meredith; sisters: Sally (John) Ancona of Homestead, Fla. and Patricia “Patsy” (Dick) Hankinson of Vienna, Va. He attended Berlin Brothersvalley High School, was a 1962 graduate of Mercersburg Academy and a 1966 graduate of Carnegie Tech. Richard was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War, a chemical engineer for Bethlehem Steel in Johnstown, an entrepreneur, and worked continuously in the coal industry from his youth. He was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ in Berlin, the Somerset American Legion, and was a founding member of the Mountain Stream Chapter of Trout Unlimited in 1975. However, he is mostly known for his support of the Somerset Children’s Aid Home and Ligonier YMCA.  Richard was a dedicated fisherman who didn’t miss a chance to cast a fly or dunk a minnow. A private family graveside service will be held at Berlin I.O.O.F. cemetery, Rev. Frank Demmy officiating. A memorial service will be held at a later date at the family farm. Arrangements by Deaner Funeral Home, Berlin. In Lieu of flowers a memorial fund will be established with Trout Unlimited for stream restoration and fish stocking in the Somerset area.
