1. Should genetically modified foods be labeled?

Several dozen activists rallied at the state Capitol on Wednesday for a bill that would require labeling of any food made with genetically modified ingredients. The activists say that consumers have a right to know what they’re eating. California voters just rejected a measure that would have labeled genetically altered food. The FDA says genetically modified food doesn’t differ significantly from conventional food. So-called “bioengineered” ingredients have been around for decades and are now in most processed foods, such as potato chips and cereal. The American Medical Association also said there was "no scientific justification for special labeling of genetically modified foods, as a class.” What’s your view?

  3. Box Office: Is 'The Impossible' a model for a new kind of hit?

Unless you're an especially plugged-in moviegoer, chances are you don’t know much about "The Impossible," a drama about a real-life Spanish family that was caught in the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami while on holiday in Thailand and suffered both tragedy and triumph in the process.

  15. Hanukkah gelt goes upscale -- and ethical

They're almost as much a part of Hanukkah as potato pancakes, the foil-wrapped chocolate candies called gelt that usually come in plastic-mesh bags at the checkout stand and taste pretty much like the leftover wax from the candles in the menorah. Embossed with designs, they're meant to represent the coins that once were given to children as an encouragement for their Jewish studies. (As with most Jewish traditions, there are multiple explanations for the tradition.)

  23. Just what is 'natural' food?

The campaign against genetically engineered foods didn't disappear with the defeat of Proposition 37, which would have required the labeling of most foods containing bioengineered ingredients. Instead, it morphed into the GMO Inside campaign, which among other things is behind a Colorado lawsuit that claims Goldfish crackers shouldn't be labeled as "natural" because they contain genetically engineered soybean oil.
