    In the July/August issue of Mental Floss magazine was an article about the international standard used to determine a kilogram. The article pointed out that, in a vault outside Paris, in a vacuum sealed under three bell jars sits a palm-sized metal cylinder composed of platinum and iridium known as the International Prototype Kilogram, Le Grand K. This cylinder was forged in 1879 and has been used since as the standard for that weight.
