1. Maryland becomes a liberal paradise

If you're a liberal living in Maryland, there's been plenty of reason to smile lately. The Old Line State continues to beat a steady path toward leading a new vanguard of progressive policy and politics in the United States.

3. Ruben Barrales, party guy

When President Obama told students in Mexico that without the support of U.S. Latinos he would not be president, he wasn't talking about the GOP's Ruben Barrales. But Barrales gets the message. He is the son of immigrants, and San Mateo County's first Latino supervisor. Mexico gave him its Ohtli medal, for his work on behalf of Mexican Americans. Once a Democrat, he went to work in the George W. Bush White House and ran San Diego's regional chamber of commerce. His principal task now, as head of GROW Elect, is cultivating Latino Republican elected officials in California, not exactly fertile soil for the GOP of late. He has his ideas why, and what to do about it.

7. Will we be who we say we are?

I devoted most of my columns over the last several weeks to the holidays, the memories they invoke and the way they bring people together. But as the year draws to a close, even I am surprised to see that none of the scenes I drew took place in church — not even by way of flashback — because I have learned more on Sunday than on any other day of the week. On Sunday I heard lessons about morality couched in stories, punctuated by dance and song. It's when I felt a visceral connection to God and a community. It's the day I saw how one man with a podium and a book could hold hundreds transfixed while he hovered between this world and the next.

9. Another side of illegal immigration

Denise Panaligan, a UCLA sophomore, didn't tell her mother where she was headed Wednesday morning. She knew that if she told the truth, her mother would worry.

11. Give thanks for the good things, large and small

As Thanksgiving Day approaches, let us reflect on the things for which we are grateful. Let us give thanks . . .
As Thanksgiving Day approaches, let us reflect on the things for which we are grateful. Let us give thanks . . . That Superstorm Sandy didn't do much damage in Maryland — and that we have a federal government to respond to the less fortunate areas...

13. A GOP whip-around on immigration

Elections do have consequences. After losing the popular vote for the fifth time in the past six presidential elections, I expected to see Republicans make some changes or risk following the dinosaur and the dodo on the path to extinction. But even I...

15. Real facts catch up with spin docs

Volumes of political spin bump up against hard facts on election night.
Volumes of political spin bump up against hard facts on election night. One particularly amusing moment came that evening when Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly interrupted political consultant Karl Rove's wildly optimistic projections for Mitt Romney's...

17. Facts and opinions in election's aftermath

Fact: The empathy factor was a big winner for President Barack Obama. Opinion: It proved impossible for a wealthy CEO-type to compete in the "he cares about us" category. Mitt Romney's "47 percent" comment most certainly (further) strengthened this...

19. A national left turn?

Politically, it was a status quo election.
Politically, it was a status quo election. Democrats held on to the White House and their majority in the U.S. Senate in Tuesday's voting. Republicans preserved their majority in the House and increased by one their hold on the majority of state...

Of all the results from this past November's elections, two numbers stand out: three, and 71. Three is the number of counties nationwide where, according to Jennifer Duffy of the Cook Political Report, if President Obama had won a smaller percentage of...

23. Obama Must Step Up His Political Diplomacy

The Hartford Courant
On Election Day, I almost blew it. Thinking that I was still registered to vote in Windsor, I went to cast my vote at Poquonock Elementary School. There I was told by a volunteer that I had to go to New Britain City Hall and get an application for a...
