1. 'Game of Thrones' recap: A hot deal for a dragon

Want to foment rebellion among the Night’s Watch? Starve the men and make them shovel pig poop. “And Now His Watch Is Ended” is the title of this week's episode, and it also is a phrase repeated in unison as the Rangers solemnly observe a comrade’s funeral pyre.

  3. It's A Gray Area: History's lessons support marriage equality

These thoughts might be controversial to some, but the issue is timely, and the moment to correct a series of injustices is now. Therefore, it is time for our country, and all of us in it, to recognize and enforce marriage equality. Before I go further,...

  11. Early choices spawned slavery in Virginia

From the beginning, the first Africans who began arriving in Virginia in 1619 faced a harder life than the white indentured servants whose labors they shared. Singled out by religion and the color of their skin, they were seen very early on as...

  13. Why we need the liberal arts It is essential to nurture creators and inventors if our society is to thrive

Aspects of recent debates about the value of a liberal arts education, its usefulness and its appropriateness strike a familiar and disturbing historical chord. Our nation's brightest students, contemplating the dedication of four years to the highest level of cognitive challenge, are discouraged by a contingent of their elders and asked to consider something more practical. "A liberal education won't prepare you for a job," the student is told. "What can you do with a degree in philosophy? English?" — and so forth. The implication is that the desire possessed by the mind for abstract challenge is inappropriate, or more specifically a waste of time and money.

  15. Justice and mercy, the identity twins

There is an interesting story in the Old Testament that involves a lender and a borrower. An audit was made, and the books didn’t balance. The borrower was called to account, and he pleaded poverty. The lender, not satisfied, held a legal advantage and so ordered the man to be sold … yes, into slavery. He then added that the man’s wife was to be sold. The lady, probably not involved, was drawn into the morass by being the wife of one who borrowed unwisely. The final thrust of the lender was to also mandate that the couple’s children also would be sold and separated from parents and each other.

  19. Column: So, what is a 'work ethic'?

In South Dakota, we are proud of our work ethic. But I don’t think I know what some people mean when they say “work ethic.” I take the work ethic to mean I take pleasure in performing a task. It means that I look for ways to...

The Census Bureau announced last week that it is dropping the use of the term "Negro" to describe black Americans in its population surveys. I suspect few will mourn the word's passing.
