  1. Doctoring in a family way

Jennifer was one of my first patients as a new doctor, and she came to see me about an unintended pregnancy. A single mom to a rambunctious 5-year-old girl, Jennifer was struggling economically and battling depression. We talked about the options available to her: continuing the pregnancy and preparing to parent another child, offering the baby for adoption or having an abortion. She chose to continue with the pregnancy, and I worked with her over the following months as she struggled with the discomforts of pregnancy, excessive weight gain and the anxiety of having to raise two small children on her own.

    Reuters
May 27 (TheWrap.com) - The 2013 Cannes Film Festival began with high hopes for a strong and deep lineup of films, struggled through days in which even the best films were in danger of being washed away by the storms, and then ended when a jury led by...

  7. Supremes waffle on marriage equality

Over the last 40 years, I've been involved in a lot of political battles for a lot of different causes: workers' rights, women's rights, gay rights, environmental protection, anti-war, anti-nuclear power, anti-urban sprawl, animal rights, gun control, clean air, open space, small farms, global warming. But I've never seen the public turn around and embrace any issue faster than marriage equality.

  11. Speed limits soon in rearview mirror

How easy to forget ("Higher speed limit law moves forward," March 21). Do some of you old timers remember the fuss we made when the speed limit on Interstate 95 was changed to 65 miles per hour? Now, 70 miles per hour is almost normal. So it will be...

  13. Honoring Harriet Tubman

President Barack Obama's designation Monday of a new national monument to Harriet Tubman, who escaped slavery on a Dorchester County plantation in 1849, then helped guide scores of other slaves to freedom in the North during the decade before the Civil War, honors a small and unprepossessing African-American woman who played an outsized role in American history.
