Stop Online Piracy Act

The Stop Online Piracy Act was a U.S. House bill introduced as a protection for content creators but ultimately viewed by the public as a federal mandate for online censorship. The bill's 2012 defeat was seen as one of the first significant lobbying victories for online service providers like Google and Wikipedia. A rough Senate equivalent to the bill was known as the PROTECT IP act.

As of spring 2012, many of the same organizations that took part in protesting SOPA are now actively fighting the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA), which many activists argue similarly infringes on citizens' civil liberties.
