  1. Brian Kelly taking 'hands on' approach

One glance at Notre Dame's first practice is all it takes to see that Brian Kelly intends to be more involved this year. He's not only the one deciding who becomes the starting quarterback.  He's also going to be intricately involved in how that guy...

SOUTH BEND -- Never underestimate the significance of presence. It's as important to the DNA of a quarterback as a quick release and the ability to elude. It tells everyone in the room, "I'm 'the man.'" It gives football coaches the confidence to hand...

  5. My favorite things about high school football

A new season of high school football kicks off in just a couple of days...and optimism is high in locker rooms, weight rooms and class rooms all across northern Indiana. Here are just a few things I'm looking forward to this fall: The new look Niles...

  7. Irish were on Big 12 agenda

    <span style="font-size: small;">Rumors are now fact.</span>
Rumors are now fact. Anonymous sources now have names. There really is validity to the suggestion that the Big 12 Conference has (or at least had) made flirtatious overtures toward landing Notre Dame for everything but football. Last week, while in...

Time for radical ideas? Five 16-school super-conferences? Conferences buying bowls? Secession from the NCAA? Four-team playoff? Eight teams? A conference affiliation for Notre Dame? College football has a lot to consider in the next couple weeks. "This...

  13. Tommy Rees

<span style="font-size: small;">April&rsquo;s Notre Dame Spring Blue-Gold game was the 30th I have worked and about the 40th I have attended, and still there was a first. It was the first time I have ever heard a player booed at the spring game, which is no more than a glorified scrimmage. The player was quarterback Tommy Rees. I couldn&rsquo;t believe it, but maybe if I had spent a little more time on line reading various Notre Dame fan forums I could have easily believed it. &nbsp; Then again I would rather have a root canal than spend a lot of time on line reading fan forums, because some of these people are not exactly real fans. They are either overly-possessed about Notre Dame football or, in a minority of cases, hate anything and everything Notre Dame.</span>

Before Mike Heuerman informed the Notre Dame coaching staff of his verbal commitment to the program, the junior tight end had a pair of football-playing brothers to notify first. Heuerman called older brother Jeff, a freshman at Ohio State, and adopted...
