1. If this isn't a complete Bears disaster, it's close

This might not be a full-blown disaster, but you can see it from here.
This might not be a full-blown disaster, but you can see it from here. The Chicago Bears let a rookie quarterback on one of the worst road teams in the league go 97 yards on 12 plays late in the fourth quarter to blow what should’ve been an easy...

3. Commissioner deserves blame for NFL farce

How uncomfortably odd but understandable NFL fans await the return of locked-out officials such as Ed Hochuli for the 2012 season with as much, if not more, anticipation than they felt for injured All-Pro players Peyton Manning and Adrian Peterson.

5. Fading Bears need change -- the sooner the better

Of all the noise surrounding the Bears' 21-13 loss to the Packers on Sunday, general manager Phil Emery easily could ignore the pregame chatter that revealed his team as one unable to back up big talk.

Oscars, smoshkers. With his scenery-chewing performance on the sidelines last weekend, Jim Harbaugh has elevated himself to the top of this year’s list of the world’s greatest dramatic actors.

9. Congress doesn't rank well against replacement refs

Replacement refs or cockroaches? Which would you rather have in your home?
Replacement refs or cockroaches? Which would you rather have in your home? Unfortunately, I don't have a direct answer about your feelings but we can get a good idea based on the work of Public Policy Polling, located in Raleigh, N.C. They took a poll...

11. So what if officials' miscues cost Bears?

Without question the selection of Bears cornerbacks Charles Tillman and Tim Jennings to start the Pro Bowl reflects how highly the rest of the league regards the tandem.

Names are resurrected and the memories attached come flooding along. These guys made Notre Dame football what it has been over the past quarter-century, or so. They're the phenoms who came to South Bend from across the country to play a game at a...

15. Miami Dolphins report card

MIAMI GARDENS — Happy Birthday, Dan Carpenter. On the day the Dolphins kicker turned 27, Carpenter nailed a 43-yard field goal at the gun to complete a 24-21 comeback victory over the Seattle Seahawks at Sun Life Stadium. That's how you end a...

17. The Times' college football rankings: The top 25

Monday night's NFL outrage with the officials reminds me of the time in 2010 that "replacement Rankman" put Boise State at No. 1 and kept the Broncos there until the Friday night after Thanksgiving. This week's standings offer their own controversial finish, with four Big Ten Conference schools bunched in the basement for what should be an exciting playoff two years in advance of college football's new format. The winner gets the Floyd of Rankman trophy, presented by John Deere, at imaginary Grain Silo Stadium. Bump-of-the-week goes to Kansas State, which rockets 10 spots to No. 6 after last week's triumph at Oklahoma. Coach Bill Snyder called from his Little Manhattan project to wonder why Rankman was not this excited about his 1998 team.

21. Goodell's NFL Vision Fades, And The Replacement Refs Are Lost

The situation with the scab officials has grown so bad, so profoundly ugly, that Roger Goodell has resorted to a charade as his No. 1 strategy. His league, once the best sports league anywhere, has become a laughingstock and Tuesday the NFL commissioner demonstrated he is willing to add to the farce.

23. Bring back the regular refs, NFL fans plead after chaotic ending

Sputtering frustration over replacement officials in the National Football League burst into full-open revolt after a controversial end-zone call that decided the fate -- wrongly, it turns out -- of Monday night's game between the Green Bay Packers and the Seattle Seahawks.
