A coach for more than 30 years, Blaney has spent his entire career in the northeast and was a 2003 inductee to the New England Basketball Hall of Fame. As a player, Blaney had a successful stint at Holy Cross, leading the Crusaders to back-to-back 20-win seasons, and was a fourth-round selection by theNew York Knicks in 1961, for which he played in the 1961-62 season.
Blaney began coaching high school three years later, eventually working his way up to the head-coaching position at his alma mater in 1972. In 22 seasons as Holy Cross' head coach, Blaney led the Crusaders to threeNCAA tournament berths, five NIT bids and a 357-276 overall record before taking over at Seton Hall. He was 38-48 over three seasons as the Pirates' coach before being dismissed in 1997. His only victory over the Huskies while at Seton Hall came in his final game at Seton Hall.
Born Nov. 12, 1939, Blaney has a wife, Maryellen, five children and five grandchildren. His son Brian became an assistant coach at Fairfield in 2008.
