  7. Boyle County sends off 181 graduates

It remains to be seen  how members of Boyle County High School's Class of 2011 will distinguish themselves in the future, but individually and as a group they have started an impressive resume already.Friday night’s commencement ceremony in the high school gymnasium was an opportunity to celebrate accomplishments of the 181 seniors.Principal Will Begley gave an abridged but impressive accounting of the group’s triumphs:Five Governor's Scholars. Top 25 in ACT scores and the preliminary versions of the test given to 8th grade students and sophomores. A graduate of the Western Kentucky University Gatton Academy for Math and Science (Justine Missik). A member of the University of Kentucky women's tennis team  (CeCe Witten). Mr. Football (Lamar Dawson). Two state football championships. While celebrating the accomplishments of the last four years, one of the top graduates, Jennifer Harris, used her time at the podium to flash forward. Harris, who received the "Most Likely to Succeed" title from her peers and is bound for the University of Louisville's J.B. Speed School of Engineering, encouraged the class to strive for greatness while staying true to themselves. Envisioning their 20th reunion, Harris said she hoped she would still recognize the people who both carried out fundraisers for earthquake victims in Haiti and pranks in the halls of the school.Eric Evans, who will study biomedical engineering at the University of Kentucky in the fall, used the framework of a commencement staple, Dr. Seuss' "Oh! The Places You'll Go," to talk about the places the class has already been.Evans also spoke about the hard work that would be necessary for the students to continue their success. Throwing in a nod to Dawson's future at the University of Southern California, Evans urged his classmates to stay disciplined if they want to reap future rewards from the hard work started in the halls of BCHS.Boyle County High School Class of 2011: Tanner Abbott, Kristofer O. 9. American art collectors ripe for study

Henry Clay Frick, J. Pierpont Morgan, Louisine and Henry O. Havemeyer in New York; J. Paul Getty, Norton Simon, Arabella and Henry E. Huntington in Los Angeles; Andrew W. Mellon in Washington, D.C.; Claribel and Etta Cone in Baltimore. Big names in the art world — and merely a sampling of Americans whose art collections have shaped the nation's museums.

  11. 'The Family Stone'

Hollywood is always making family comedies, but they are rarely about real families: relations who are as difficult as they are wonderful, people who both love and irritate the heck out of each other. Families like "The Family Stone."

  13. 'School for Scoundrels'

The comedy "School for Scoundrels," about a victimized, love-struck New York meter maid (Jon Heder of "Napoleon Dynamite") who gets tutored in jerky alpha male-ness, may not be as devilishly enjoyable as its title suggests, but it's by no means like waiting for the reprieve of an end-of-class bell, either. Loosely based on a 1960 British comedy, this is a modest education-of-a-punching-bag entertainment with a kind of breezily rude compatibility — a hallmark of sorts for both co-writer/director Todd Phillips ("Road Trip," "Starsky & Hutch") and the wonderful actor assigned to play the self-help instructor from hell, Billy Bob Thornton.

    Special To The Times

  19. 'Cheaper by the Dozen'

"Cheaper by the Dozen" apparently means to celebrate family life, but it's as synthetic as a plastic Christmas tree. Not for a second will an only child find anything to envy about the Bakers of Midland, Ill., where a household of 12 children means that sometimes a parent cannot always address an offspring by his correct name. It's hard to imagine that director Shawn Levy and his writers, in reworking the autobiographical novel by Frank Bunker Gilbreth Jr. and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey, intended anything but a warm holiday treat, but, if only by default, the film plays subversively.

  21. 'Without a Paddle'

"Without a Paddle," a low-hanging, late-summer comedy starring Seth Green, Matthew Lillard and Dax Shepard, owes more than just its title to a toilet-related idiom. Halfway up the creek, our heroes encounter a pair of tree-dwelling preservationists whose strict adherence to the Outward Bound pledge to "leave no trace" unexpectedly saves them during an ambush. Also, the familiar expression about the self-evidence of ursine bathroom habits acts as a hinge for a major plot point later. Are you familiar with the expression? Is the pope Catholic?

  23. 'Just Married'

"Just Married" is of interest only as a product of such generic blandness as to be absolutely airtight: not a whiff of originality or real life has been allowed to spoil its plastic perfection. Ashton Kutcher and Brittany Murphy are attractive and skilled performers as the film's newlyweds, but the movie is so mechanical it's like watching Barbie and Ken dolls going through the motions.
