The Hartford Courant
"Hey dad, watching the election in a lounge now with a large group of people. I'll call you when I get home. Are you nervous? I kind of am." Email from my daughter in England to me the night of the election "I fried some catfish today and cooked (most...

5. Crime & Punishment: Hurricane Sandy Reveals a Skeleton on the New Haven Green

Since March of 2011, a handful of University of Connecticut students have published The UConn Free Press, an "underground" publication full of anti-authority rants and displays of amateur graphic design. The monthly rag is not only unafraid to put an f-...

7. My Hurricane Watch

One of my first visions of New Haven was a hurricane. I was helping a friend move here from Boston, it was 1985, and the hurricane in question was Gloria. We were headstrong youth, and though the forecast was dire we had already the U-Haul, so we plowed...

The Antlers’ music is ethereal, soulful, righteous and rooted in a special kind of belief system based on helplessness (“I Would Have Saved Her If I Could”), eternal questions (“On an endless ladder, climbing higher”), pain...

17. There's Life After the Olympics

The London Olympics, not to mention the frequent mention of the long-ago Lake Placid Winter Olympics in connection with Mitt Romney’s presidential aspirations, has had me reminiscing about a close-to-home Olympian spectacle: the Special Olympics World Summer Games, held in New Haven in July of 1995.

19. The Young Play Intercambio Saturday Night

The Young are a four-piece garage rock band from Austin, TX. They were signed to Matador Records late last year, giving them instant indie credibility whever they go. But they're good too. They've got a lo-fi, aggresive, washed-out sound that's got some Stooges and MC5 influence, but also some stuff reminiscent of Pavement or even The Wedding Present. They'll be at Intercambio (756 Chapel St., New Haven) making their Connecticut debut this Saturday night care of Redscroll Records, and Purling Hiss, Estrogen Highs and Inclined Plane will open the show. Go see Roseanne Cash for free on the New Haven Green at 7pm with the rest of the masses, then head over a couple of blocks to sink back into the comfy underground. Sounds like a great weekend, no? It's $8 and all ages are welcome.
