17. Norma Leola (Ebaugh) Commotes, 96, of Cumberland, Md., formerly of Fogletown

Norma Leola (Ebaugh) Commotes, 96, of Cumberland, Md., formerly of Fogletown (Garrett), died Monday, May 16, 2011, at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center after a brief illness. Born June 10, 1914, in Summit Township (near Meyersdale), she was preceded in death by parents, William R. Ebaugh and Edna Barnhart-Berkley Ebaugh; husband, Joseph L. Commotes; and brothers, Joseph E. Ebaugh, and Lloyd W. Ebaugh; her paternal grandmother, Mary Susan Saylor, was a descendant of the Joseph, Jacob and Peter Saylor (Seiler) families who settled on Saylor Hill in Meyersdale circa 1772. David Hay, of Somerset, wrote a great series of articles for the Meyersdale New Republic in 2005 about Norma’s life in the Berkley’s Mill and surrounding areas of Pennsylvania. Norma is survived by a son, Roger E. Commotes, Cumberland; several nieces and nephews and many special friends of all ages, including Richard Oliver, Danny Hay, Naomi Oliver, Kathy Athey Picking, Arlene Sterner and family, her wonderful “adopted” Mexican family; parents Armando and Olga and the three Tenorio-Chavez children, Guillermo, Armando and Olgita; along with several other 'young Mexicans’ who lovingly referred to her as their “gringo grandmother.” She “never met a stranger” and enjoyed striking up a conversation with people wherever she went, be it sitting on a bench at a mall, or standing in line waiting for a table in a restaurant. She was especially proud of her only son, and was always more than willing to show his picture to any “new friend” she could!!! Norma was employed as a sewing machine operator at several different factories during her working career, which began at the Meyersdale Manufacturing Co. upon her high school graduation in 1932 and ended in 1974, with her employment at Laurel Hill Sportswear of New Centerville. She enjoyed gardening, playing both piano and organ, and spending time with her friends and loved ones. Norma had just returned from a four month trip to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, where she had been spending the last several winters. She was a former member of both the Fritz Lutheran Church and the Beachdale Church of the Brethren. Memorial tributes should be directed to the humane society of one's choice, since she held a special place in her heart for “animals of all sorts”, and especially the two little poodle mix “rescues”, blackie and misty, that came into her life in 2004. Norma was a wonderful wife and mother, a very kind and generous lady who will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. She and Joseph enjoyed a union of 56 years till he passed away in November of 1995. The Adams family funeral home of Cumberland provided great comfort during the loss of my loving mother, and their efforts are greatly appreciated. A special Mass will be celebrated at 7 p.m. Wednesday evening, May 18th, 2011, at the Church of San Miguel Archangel in Puerto Vallarta, by her friends and loved ones living in Mexico. The Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur Street, Cumberland, Md., (www.AdamsFamilyFuneralHome.com) is in charge of the arrangements.
