  11. A new strategy for the GOP

WASHINGTON -- It has become conventional wisdom that Republicans are suffering an internal split that President Obama is successfully exploiting to neuter the Republican House. It is not true, however, that the Republican split is philosophical and fundamental. And that a hopelessly divided GOP is therefore headed for decline, perhaps irrelevance.

  15. Eugene Patterson, conscience of the South

During World War II, as a tank commander in Gen. George S. Patton's 3rd Army, Eugene Patterson participated in a daring maneuver that helped assure the Allied victory in the Battle of the Bulge. Asked subsequently what he was most proud of about his part in this and other engagements, Patterson often talked about how he led troops into combat not with an impersonal "Go" but with a command that signaled his intention to expose himself to the same dangers they faced: "Let's go."

  21. Will Chuck Hagel make a good secretary of defense?

President Obama has nominated former Nebraska Sen. Chuck Hagel, a decorated Vietnam veteran, to be secretary of defense, to the consternation of some conservative Republicans in Congress. The complaints against Mr. Hagel are that he is anti-Israel, anti-gay and that he doesn’t take Iran’s nuclear threat seriously enough. Supporters say there charges are bogus.  Mr. Hagel did, 14 years ago, make an unfortunate remark about an ambassadorial candidate who was gay, but Mr. Hagel has apologized and promised to uphold the repeal of “don’t ask, don’t tell.” They say Mr. Hagel voted for military aid to Israel and is committed to its survival, and has a nuanced but sensible position on Iran, with all options on the table. Would he make a good secretary of defense? What’s your view?
