9. Worry about dog, not fence

QUESTION: My new home has a redwood fence around it, and I am afraid my dog might dig under it and escape. My last house had a cinder block fence that kept my dog safe. Are there any low, small hedge plants or perennials with thorns that I might plant...

11. Inspired to turn over an old leaf

Times Staff Writer
As a poor kid growing up in L.A.'s Chinatown in the 1970s, David Ko spent hours in the library studying old, dusty copies of Architectural Digest. He would take the bus to Hancock Park or Pasadena to visit some of the mansions featured in the magazine,...

13. The toast of Burbanque

I didn't mention where we were going when I invited two girlfriends out to a French bistro with my husband and me. I knew they both loved French food — foie gras! moules! coq au vin! — and that one thrilled at the prospect of a honeymoon in Paris, her very first trip there. Mais oui, but they would love to come! What time? The two showed up at my door at the appointed hour dressed up for the occasion in little black dresses, heels, dangly earrings and French perfume.

17. Skateboarders, the free radicals

Times Staff Writer
ONLY in Southern California could a cultural revolution be started by ragtag 11-year-olds. Not that these 11-year-olds had any idea what they were doing. No, these prepubescent "skateboarders" were just surfers who, in 1972, after the waves had blown...

23. 2006 Bishop by Ben Glaetzer Barossa Valley Shiraz

Sometimes you just get a hankering for a big, bold red, but that doesn't necessarily mean a wine that obliterates everything else on the table. Bold can also be elegant, which is exactly why I fell for the 2006 Bishop from Australia's Barossa Valley. The Shiraz fruit, from the dry-farmed Ebenezer vineyards, is gorgeous, with a deep ruby color, intense flavors of cassis and blackberries, and gentle tannins. The Bishop also has a rare elegance, despite its exuberance.
