1. Crime & Punishment: Director of Connecticut SPCA Charged With 62 Counts of Animal Cruelty

Rufus Spearman, who police allegedly caught carrying drugs and a gun in his car, showed up for his court date at the New Haven Superior Court, where parole officers were waiting to arrest him on additional charges of violating his parole, reports the New Haven Register. It was then that they discovered Spearman, 36, was walking around with crack cocaine, marijuana and PCP in his underwear. In similar news, the Connecticut Post reports that ex-con Jonathon Baker, who was on route to an appointment with IRS agents, allegedly entered a Bridgeport court building with a bag containing drug dealing supplies (such as a digital scale and glassine envelopes) as well as several bullets — or as Baker, 35, explained in a text message he sent from the courthouse: "My dumb ass came thru the metal detector at the IRS and forgot there were bullets in my bag. Now I'm waiting to see if they gonna lock me up." (They did.)

  9. Is Tom Foley One of the Republican Losers of the 2012 Election?

One Connecticut Republican who may have come out of last week’s elections as a significant loser wasn’t even running for anything. He has his eye on 2014 and he can’t be too happy when he reads the entrails of this election’s GOP defeats.

  11. 11/9/2012-So Long Linda

This makes at least four high profile Connecticut multi-millionaires in the last 32 years to go down in flames trying to buy a political office; Joel Schiavone, Ned Lamont, Tom Foley and Linda Mcmahon. Can we safely say that we voters can't be bought? Well, let's put it this way, a majority can't be bought. There are still a large number of misguided, desperate people who will gladly sell their vote for a promise. Pathetic.

  15. Crime & Punishment: A Couple People Who Really Hate Obama

Every autumn, Colchester holds a community-made scarecrow display on the Town Green. On election years, town Democrats sponsor a patch and put up scarecrow effigies of candidates, according to the Norwich Bulletin. Not the best at arts and crafts, the Dems' display this year featured straw men with pumpkin heads and headshots of candidates (including the president, vice president and five state or local candidates) taped to pumpkins. Someone apparently found that threatening enough to light the display on fire. Republican First Selectman Gregg Schuster joked on Facebook, "At the time, I was in a meeting with over a dozen people that will confirm it wasn't me!" Democrats accused him of not taking the arson seriously, leading, of course, to a pissing match in which Schuster accused the Democrats of being more concerned with his comments than the unemployment rate.

  21. This Week's Picks: 4 Author Events in Fairfield County

Writers may be able to work from home in their underwear, which is a pretty sweet deal, but they've also got to hit the road and promote their books and publications from time to time. This week there are a handful of such events in local libraries and bookstores. Jeffrey Lyons is the son of New York Post columnist Leonard Lyons, and he recounts his dad's life rubbing elbows with 20th century icons like Salvador Dali, Frank Sinatra and Ernest Hemingway in his book Stories My Father Told Me. He'll be appearing at the Greenwich Library. Mary Rose Scinto tells the story of the song "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye" in her book of the same name, a tune recorded in Bridgeport and now ubiquitous at every sporting event in the country. She's stopping by the Bridgeport Library. Newbury Honor winner Joan Bauer speaks about her new children's novel Almost Home at the Fairfield U Bookstore and former Fine Gardening magazine managing editor Steve Silk talks gardening photography at the Westport Library.

  23. Is Connecticut In Play Politically?

State Republican Party Chairman Jerry Labriola is doubtless too optimistic in trying to persuade national party officials that Connecticut will be a battleground state between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney in November — that the Electoral College math could have a nutmeg factor — and that they should invest heavily in campaign infrastructure here.
