3. The Victims And Their Stories

Killed in Friday's horrific shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School were 20 children, ages 6 and 7, and six adults. In the day since the worst massacre at a primary school in the country's history, stories of heroism in the face of death and of young lives lost are beginning to emerge.

  5. See the 2012 Hartford Art School Faculty Exhibition at Joseloff Gallery in West Hartford

There's a richness to the professor/student relationship that transcends the simple transmission of information. Sometimes, as a teacher, you have to flex your mental or artistic muscles a bit to get your point across. Until mid-December, Hartford Art School faculty members put up or shut up; that's their art (including Steven DiGiovanni's Untitled (Oil Refinery), pictured above) hanging on the walls of the University of Hartford's Joseloff Gallery. In all, more than 40 faculty members participated in this show, leaving their crammed offices in the ceramics, drawing, media arts, illustration, sculpture, painting, photography, printmaking, visual communication design, and foundation studies departments with works in hand. Pretty impressive.

  7. Teen Driving Laws Need Further Tightening

In December 2010, those who worked on the 2007-2008 overhaul of Connecticut's teen driver law gathered at the state Capitol to review and celebrate evidence of the new law's progress. Connecticut had transformed its teen driver law from one of the nation's most lenient to one of the strictest. Data from the first two years showed not only substantial crash reductions, but also our state leading the nation on a percentage basis.

  13. Where to Get Good Peruvian Chicken in Hartford

Roast chicken is a basic dish, but serious chefs can get really worked up over its rustic charms. Like artists practicing their figure sketches or jazz musicians riffing on the blues, it's rudimentary and maybe even simple, but to do roast chicken well can demonstrate a kind of culinary mastery. Or it can at least just taste really good. The Peruvians have achieved greatness with their roast chicken. And the rest of the world is catching on.

  15. A Conversation Between Etgar Keret and David Edelstein at West Hartford's Mandell Jewish Community Center

We don't often expect writers to have a healthy, positive self-image. Etgar Keret (pictured), who'll take part in a conversation with New York Magazine film critic David Edelstein on the Zach Campus of the Mandell JCC this Sunday, doesn't disappoint in that regard. When asked about two characters in "Creative Writing," a piece of short fiction published in The New Yorker last year, Keret said he thought it would be interesting "to create a couple of characters who were just as fucked up as I am." The Israeli writer will talk about, among other topics, his latest bestselling short-story collection, Suddenly a Knock on the Door.

  17. eighth blackbird Plays at University of Hartford on Nov. 15

The Hartt School of Music's affiliation with the Richard P. Garmany Fund has brought some tremendous talent to the area over the last couple of years, including the Bang On A Can All-Stars, pianist Christopher Riley, the Emerson String Quartet, violinist Regina Carter and several other superb artists and ensembles. This year's series is no different; Tempesta di Mara started the ball rolling last month with two feet planted firmly in the Baroque period, and now eighth blackbird (pictured), a Grammy Award-winning new-music sextet, catapults us into the present moment. Recent eighth blackbird commissions include works by proto-minimalist Steve Reich, Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Jennifer Higdon and Princeton composer Steven Lackey, and there are more works on the way from John Luther Adams and Aaron Jay Kernis. They're equally comfortable with spiky 20th-century expressionism (they recently performed Arnold Schoenberg's Pierrot Lunaire). If you're expecting an easy-going, laid back evening of calming, classical chamber music, you might as well stay home.
