9. New Exhibits at Middlesex Community College

College students are either heading back to school this week or already did. If you're an MxCC student (or just in the area), head to Middlesex Community College's Pegasus and Niche galleries for two new exhibits: Sonya Suydam Gill's "Color," opening on Jan. 28 (that's her "River at Dusk," an oil on canvas work, pictured above), and Michael DiGiorgio's "Drawn From Life, opening on Feb. 4. Gill's inspiration comes from the world around her — flowers, water, fabrics and colors — while DiGiorgio illustrates his love of bird species in their natural habitats. Both are local Connecticut artists (Gill lives in Chester, DiGiorgio in Madison) and have exhibited their work locally and throughout the country. Head to Gill's opening reception on Feb. 6.

  23. Visit the Shoreline Arts Trail This Weekend in Guilford and Madison

Let's take a moment to bask in the glow of Connecticut's artistically talented shoreline-area residents. Or maybe instead of a moment, let's stretch it out to a day or two. The Shoreline Arts Trail, an annual exploration of art studios in shoreline towns, returns this year on Nov. 17 and 18. The trail (meant to be driven, not walked) winds its way through Branford, Guilford and Madison, with yellow "Open Studio" signs posted around to guide you. Included on the trail are The Glass Hut (59 N. Harbor St., Branford, 203-481-0408, jcartglass.com), Tabar Designs (71 Whitfield St., Guilford, 203-458-8868, tabardesigns.com), Guilford Art Center (411 Church St., Guilford, 203-458-2187), Wildwood Farm (55 Sheep Pasture Rd., Madison, 203-245-9786) and Lerner Gallery (22 Scotland Ave., Madison, 203-779-5363, lernergallery.com). Visit shorelineartstrail.com for a full list of participating artists/studios and a map of the trail.
