  23. Florida Legislature OKs $50M for cross-Florida trail

According to <a href="http://www.clickorlando.com/news/Fla-lawmakers-agree-to-50-million-for-trail/-/1637132/19832042/-/ew7sylz/-/index.html" target="_blank">news reports</a>, Florida legislators have agreed to allocate $50 million to buy right of way to connect scattered trails to create a 275-mile trail network that would span the state from St. Petersburg to Titusville. The $50 million still could be vetoed by Gov. Rick Scott, but I suspect the prospect of job creation might overcome any qualms. According to the <a href="http://community.railstotrails.org/blogs/trailblog/archive/2013/04/22/florida-s-50-million-a-savvy-investment-in-the-state.aspx" target="_blank">Rails-to-Trails Conservancy</a>, Americans spend $81 billion a year on bicycling gear and trips versus $51 billion for airplane tickets and fees. Any lawmakers who have cycled the <a href="http://apps.ocfl.net/images/maps/WOT_TrailMap.pdf" target="_blank">West Orange Trail </a>could only be impressed by the revival of Winter Garden's historic downtown, which now thrives with restaurants, a coffee shop, bike rentals, a farmers' market and more. The former <a href="http://www.taplines.net/March/obstory1.htm" target="_blank">Orange Belt Railway</a> from Sanford to St. Petersburg would likely be a main right of way for much of the trail system. It already is incorporated into the <a href="http://www.lakecountyfl.gov/pdfs/economic_development_tourism/SouthLakeTrail_Map_EDT_web.pdf" target="_blank">South Lake Trail</a>, <a href="http://www.seminolecountyfl.gov/parksrec/trails_streetscapes/trails_semwekiva.aspx" target="_blank">Seminole Wekiva Trail</a>, <a href="http://apps.ocfl.net/images/maps/WOT_TrailMap.pdf" target="_blank">West Orange Trail</a> and <a href="http://www.pinellascounty.org/trailgd/" target="_blank">Pinellas Trail</a>. A new segment would likely connect the Maitland end of the Seminole Wekiva Trail to the Ocoee part of the West Orange Trail -- the little-used tracks are still there. Another long segment would likely connect the Clermont end of the South Lake Trail to the Tarpon Springs end of the Pinellas Trail. <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/palmateer/6175572394/in/set-72157629462181406/" target="_blank">Again, the rail right of way is still evident along much of the route</a>. It runs west through Groveland, Mascotte, Bay Lake and Stuckey, intersects the <a href="http://www.floridastateparks.org/vanfleet/" target="_blank">Van Fleet Trail </a>and <a href="http://www.dep.state.fl.us/gwt/guide/regions/crossflorida/trails/with_state.htm" target="_blank">Withlacoochee State Trail</a>, then goes through tiny Trilby, San Antonio and Odessa and intersects&nbsp; the <a href="http://www.pascocountyfl.net/index.aspx?NID=673" target="_blank">Suncoast Trail</a> before reaching Tarpon Springs.
