1. At Niles' heart, a strong sense of pride

April Maher pushes a shopping cart through the crowded aisles at Jerry's Fruit and Garden Center on Milwaukee Avenue. Maher, who lives in neighboring Park Ridge, places two cartons of strawberries in her cart and says she likes to shop in Niles. "Even when I take a full cart to my car I don't think I've spent 20 bucks," she says, referring to the competitive pricing at the locally-owned market. "You're hard-pressed to drop 20 bucks at Jerry's."

  5. A fuller flowering of Salvadoran flavors

A foodie rite of passage here in Los Angeles is to walk the pupusa mile: that stretch of Beverly Boulevard where Koreatown's northeastern fringe pans to a scramble of auto services, a hostess club or two, and Central American restaurants and bakeries. This is the old-guard Salvadoran restaurant row, but these days a new wave of restaurants is revealing a wealth of regional dishes beyond that well-trod corridor.

  19. There's no comforting cartoonist Ivan Brunetti

Late on a Friday afternoon, the worst time of the week for a book signing, cartoonist Ivan Brunetti sat behind the counter at Chicago Comics in Lakeview and waited for fans. He waited and sighed. A line would form, fade away, form, fade. Some customers asked where the bathroom was. A girl with emerald hair walked up. "I draw in graphic novel style," she said, placing one of his books before him, opening to a blank inside cover, "but I read your books, and your comics have been incredibly helpful, inspiring. I want to thank you."
