1. Alonso was a failure

City schools CEO Andrés Alonso's performance was marked by, "a series of cheating scandals — found by the state to have taken place during the year the district's progress was most celebrated" and further under his tenure, "The system had paid $14 million in overtime over several years, with the top earner being Alonso's driver." ("City schools chief Alonso resigns," May 6.) This track record will help recruit the next "great urban education reformer"?

  3. Time for nation to unite

Targeting tea party groups is an ironic act on the part of the Internal Revenue Service ("Taxing the tea party," May 14). Examples of bullying tactics, corruption and neglect keeps cropping up all over the map of America. In the midst of this, why pour gasoline on emotions by labeling tea party members views as, "extremist, anti-civil rights, anti-immigration?" Snarky remarks in an editorial, however tempting, are not constructive.

  13. Washington College using last year's first-round exit from NCAA tournament as motivation

Last May, Washington College ended a three-year drought from the NCAA tournament, but dropped a 5-4 decision to Goucher in a first-round game at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium in Chestertown. That quick exit has lingered around the program, and coach Jeff Shirk said the players are using it as motivation for Wednesday’s first-round home game against Colorado College (13-4).

  23. Washington College mired in difficult week with Salisbury up next

Fighting for a berth in the Centennial Conference tournament, No. 12 Washington College could have used a week to dissect last Saturday’s 15-10 loss to No. 2 Dickinson and prepare for Saturday’s road contest against Gettysburg. Instead, the Shoremen get the unenviable task of welcoming reigning national champion and No. 5 Salibury to Chestertown Wednesday night for its next installment of the “War on the Shore” annual series.
