Highlights
Beginnings: When the South Side Rail Road arrived in the Five Towns area in 1869, Woodmere and its tiny neighbor to the south, the present-day village of Woodsburgh, were one. The depot land was donated by liquor tycoon Samuel Wood, who about this time bought most of the surrounding land in a section known in earlier times as Browers Point, after early settlers. Wood, who had grown up in Rockaway, built two hotels, one the massive Woodsburgh Pavilion, catering to wealthy people. He named his new resort compound Woodsburgh, after his own family. He sold large tracts to New York millionaires to build summer places.
