1. Going Mowgli? Just be careful where you step

The no-diapers movement is reportedly gathering great force in New York, where a cadre of hipster moms in SoHo and Brooklyn are trying to save the environment and let their little ones go free. I call it the "Go Mowgli" movement, after the little boy...

  15. News of the Weird: Electric Chastity Belt

To counter the now-well-publicized culture of rape in India, three engineers in Chennai said in March that they are about to send to the market women's anti-rape lingerie, which will provide both a stun-gun-sized blast of electricity against an aggressor and a messaging system sending GPS location to family members and the police about an attack in progress. After the wearer engages a switch, anyone touching the fitted garment will, said one developer, get “the shock of his life” (even though the garment's skin side would be insulated). The only marketing holdup, according to a March report in The Indian Express, is finding a washable fabric.

  17. Review: Andrew Norman a sound investment at Brooklyn Festival

There is little mistaking California's 22nd largest city for Brooklyn, N.Y., to say nothing of the literally lifeless Glendale section of western Queens, adjacent to Brooklyn. Unlike New York City's Glendale, ours has, despite accommodating Forest Lawn, more living than dead (Glendale in Queens is home to many cemeteries). But despite its vitality, our Glendale hardly has a Brooklyn hipster vibe (although its Armenian restaurants may attract the occasional nearby Atwater Village artist).

  21. Elderly Siblings Arrested Over Toilet Paper Tussle

A squabble over a roll of toilet paper landed an elderly pair of Brooklyn, NY siblings in jail last week. Sixty-seven-year-old Howard Meltzer and his 72-year-old sister Bernice have been on the outs for years. In fact, even though they share a house together they have a restraining order against each other. But things came to a head last week when the sister allegedly dashed to her bedroom with the last roll of Charmin and locked herself in. So Howard, who walks with a cane and sometimes uses a motorized scooter, banged on her door and didn’t let up until almost midnight. “The roll was full when I went there in the morning” Howard said. “She unloaded a whole roll and left just a little, and when I looked up to the reserve it wasn’t there.” Howard then threatened to call the police on his sister who, he said, put the roll back by midnight.” By that time she was fed up with her brother’s constant banging and called 911. Because the two were under restraining orders the cops charged them both with violating them. Both were released without bail. “I can only imagine what was going on with those two,” said a law-enforcement source, who added “But when you gotta go, you gotta go.”
