1. Lehigh Valley prepares for powder keg dubbed 'Frankenstorm'

Predictions for the hybrid storm bearing down on the Northeast keep worsening and the tone of the coverage is growing ever more strident, so it's no wonder the phone at Ice Cream World has been ringing off the hook.

  5. Monster storm closing in on Valley region

After almost a week of ominous forecasts, the weather system born of a giant hurricane, a winter storm and an arctic air mass is upon us. And it's not going anywhere fast.

  9. Post-hurricane question: Do we really need traffic signals?

Q: Regarding your observation that traffic seemed to be flowing smoothly through the intersection of 19th and Tilghman streets in Allentown when the traffic signals had no power, I've noticed the same thing. At your request, I continued to check, and had no issues for an entire week going through there with temporary stop signs posted. As long as you don't have some rude motorist to deal with, the only complication at this intersection is the turning lanes, and even that runs smoothly as long as everyone plays nice. Four stop signs might work well there permanently.

  15. Signs forbid a legal practice: using cell phone while driving

Q: I've seen signs indicating 'no cell phone while driving' at several entry points to the city of Bethlehem, including on southbound Route 512 (Center Street) just past the Route 22 overpass. I thought there was a texting ban that was a state law, but that the courts ruled municipal cellphone bans illegal. If that's the case, why are the signs posted in Bethlehem?

  17. Pennsylvania's lawyers will protect you against yourself

It is cruel to expect people to be responsible for themselves and for what they do to themselves.

  23. Motorist sheds light on Freemansburg Bridge lights

Q: The overhead lights on the Freemansburg Bridge are on during the day and off at night. I called PennDOT's 'Pothole Hotline' and they said it's not their responsibility. PennDOT seems to maintain the rest of the bridge. In the past I called about weeds obstructing the view of traffic coming from the south, and PennDOT took care of the problem. Whoever is paying the bill for the lights is not getting their money's worth.
