Eric Church is now officially an “Artist of the Year!” The singer was honored this past weekend by CMT for having one of the biggest years in country music. The singer closed out the show with a powerful performance of his hit “Homeboy,” which was accompanied by a beautiful string section.

“We had toyed with just doing it with just myself and an acoustic guitar and then an orchestra. We decided to at least involve kinda what the song is, and but the band in there and crank it up in the middle. But it turned out great—I was happy with it. I thought it came off good!”

Luke Bryan, Miranda Lambert, Jason Aldean, Kenny Chesney, Toby Keith, and Carrie Underwood were also honored as CMT’s Artists of the Year. The star-studded event boasted performances and several collaborations, including Luke with One Republic’s Ryan Tedder, and Eli Young Band and Kacey Musgraves performing “Come Over” as a tribute to Kenny. The show also featured appearances by Duck Dynasty’s Willie Robertson, baseball legends Roger Clemens and Chipper Jones, and hosts Rascal Flatts and Hayden Panettiere.
