LOS ANGELES (PIX11)—A Los Angeles woman is living a nightmare after being disfigured by an unlicensed plastic surgeon, and she is speaking out so other women don't fall prey.
Dinora Rodriguez, of Los Angeles, woke up after a surgery to replace leaking breast implants to find that her breasts had been fused together.
American Society of Plastic Surgeons, who are now launching an anti-fraud advertising campaign, "Rodriguez had breast implant surgery from a non-board-certified plastic surgeon and woke up horrified to learn that her implants were merged together."
"It was a terrible experience waking up from surgery and seeing that this had happened. I didn't know to check my doctor's qualifications and I regret it," said Rodriguez.
The surgeon cut through nerves and muscle during the operation, leaving Rodriguez with sharp pains in her torso.
Not only that, the surgeon performed an unwanted cosmetic eye surgery that left Rodriguez unable to fully close her eyelids. According to reports, Rodriguez will have to use special eye drops for the rest of her life to keep her eyes lubricated.
"Patients are getting injured, some are dying during procedures performed by non-board-certified plastic surgeons," said Malcolm Z. Roth, MD, ASPS President. "We want patients to understand what to ask their doctor and what to look for so that they can maximize their chance of a safe and successful procedure."
At an ASPS meeting in Denver, Roth announced that the advertising campaign is meant to help patients avoid "white coat deception." Just because a doctor is wearing a white coat, Roth said, it doesn't mean she is qualified.
Rodriguez has undergone an operation to separate her breasts, a procedure reportedly paid for with money awarded in a lawsuit against the unqualified surgeon.
