At least Nero played the fiddle while rome burned. But us? Apparently we can’t even read a thermometer. While evidence of climate change piles up around us like withering piles of corn stalks our esteemed leaders are only allowing us to head right into the abyss.
Lets see here. This week alone we have an iceberg the size of Manhattan breaking off Greenland and floating out to sea. And today (7/19) the bulletin is that the drought has set a record for the 21st Century. Okay the century is only 12 years along, but you can bet your last drop of water that this record will be broken before the century is old enough to drive.
With all of the drivel coming from the presidential campaigns you don’t exactly have to go to Google or Wikipedia to find out how much discussion there has been about climate change. Just to give them the benefit of the doubt, I did. Zero, zip, nada, nothing.
However if you Google something like recent weather disasters, the accumulated tome is longer and more frightening than Dark Knight Rises. Junk science? Sure that has to be it. And the staggering recent list of weather disasters must be nothing but a mirage.
Speaking of junk, I see and hear where the far right wing nuts (as opposed to the few thoughtful conservatives we have left) are tossing around that “is he really an American” nonsense about President Obama. It started earlier this week with the titular head of the current Republican Party, Russsssh. Once he established the talking points memo, otherwise sensible John Sununu jumped in and then pulled off one of the oldest political tricks in the bag, saying he didn’t exactly mean that. In other words he said what he really wanted to say, got it out in the 24-hour news cycle, then glibly ran for cover.
There are plenty of political reasons to disagree with Obama but Joe McCarthy is dead and long ago discredited and Obama is a good American.
Now here is something all Americans can agree on. How many meetings do you think were held to discuss, debate, argue the finer points of well dressed men and women BEFORE a final decision was made on the formal uniforms for our Olympic teams?
And no one thought to ask or question where they were made? That group has already won our first gold medal. For stupidity.
