A Kokomo man was arrested Thursday in connection with the death of his 67-year-old mother.
Officers with the Kokomo Police Department responded to the area of Sycamore and Berkley in reference to someone breaking into a vehicle. When police arrived, the officers found Ronald Calvert, 50, who had dried blood on his hands, face and clothes.
Officers responded to Calvert’s home in the 1500 block of West Markland Avenue to check on his mother, Joyce Philapy. When the officers arrived, they found her deceased on the floor.
The probable cause stated Calvert said he got into a verbal argument with his mother. He said he beat his mother repeatedly before stabbing her.
Calvert told investigators he was “sick of Philapy and tired of living with her.” When asked what he planned to do after leaving the home, Calvert replied he intended to kill someone else.
Police said Calvert stated he was taking Benadryl and that the drug made him believe he was somebody he was not.
Philapy died from blunt force trauma to the head and chest, according to Howard County Coroner Jay Price.
Calvert was charged with murder and resisting law enforcement. He will appear for his initial hearing on December 8.
