Ice Storms

They can be one of the most dangerous of all winter storms.  The 1998 Ice Storm that struck North America was one of the worst ever.  A series of low pressure systems battered the Northeast of the U.S. and the Southeast of Canada between January 5th and January 10th and deposited up to 5 inches of ice on the area.   Millions of people were left without power for days and even weeks.  More than 30 deaths were blamed on the storm and it caused between 5 and 7 billion dollars in damage.  The storm was so powerful that about 1,000 steel electrical pylons, said to be the strongest in the world, were brought down by the ice.
