It was on this day, May 3, 1999, that a violent tornado outbreak struck the central part of the country.  Across Oklahoma, Texas, Tennessee, and Kansas 66 tornados touched down.  There was even an F5 tornado reported.  F5 tornados have winds of around 300 MPH and cause devastating damage.  There were also 3 tornados that were confirmed as F4s.  Close to 50 people lost their lives in the deadly outbreak.  This tornado outbreak caused $1.5 billion in damage across the area.  The atmosphere was so unstable during the outbreak that severe weather continually pounded the area for nearly 3 days.  This tornado outbreak ranks as one of the most severe outbreaks in United States history.
