(WSBT) A number of Amish and Mennonite families were hit hard by the tornado. Most of them do not carry insurance.

But they have already started the rebuilding process on their own, with the help of church members and neighbors.

Don and Sandy Helmuth are counting their blessings. The Mennonite couple lost their home in the storm.

But they have already had the damage cleaned up, and had the foundation poured for a new home.

"The Amish and the church community has just come forth in a huge way,” Sandy told WSBT News. “The love of God is just pouring out to us."

“The community, we’ve drawn together. We pull together. We help each other,” explained Don. “We just are really grateful that we have that privilege of living here."

Just across from their home on Monday morning over 50 people, many of the Amish-Mennonite faith, turned out to help David Mast. He lost four buildings in the tornado, including his welding shop and a barn.

They’ve been at it since the tornado hit.

“It’s a lot of Amish people but there was a lot of people here that weren’t Amish either,” said David Mast’s son Robert. “Everybody helped. I mean I’d just like to say thanks to everybody.”

One of the hardest hit was Kevin Yoder — an Amish farmer who has received an outpouring of support from many people.

“We had four or five buildings lost, part of my house is gone, and Friday we had 200 people here, Saturday we had 300, and today it looks like about 100, and it looks to me like I’ll have a new roof tonight on two or three of the buildings,” Yoder said. “It’s the most humbling experience I’ve ever had in my life.”
