(WSBT) Cleanup continues in Nappanee, two weeks after a tornado ripped through the small town. Volunteers spent most of the day Thursday demolishing a church so more volunteers can rebuild it.

As the walls and memories came crashing down around 9 a.m. Thursday, church members at New Beginnings Assembly of God clung to their faith.

“To me, it’s God working again for us,” explained Russ Maples. “He’s with us and we know that He’ll be there until the end.”

For him and the other 50 congregation members, the damage caused by last month's tornado was tough to face.

"My heart just broke when I saw this because we put a lot of time [into it]," he explained. “And this church was built with love labored. There was no cost. Nobody charged us anything, it was fully volunteer-built."

That's where the Hope Crisis Response Network comes in. Based out of Elkhart, the non-profit organization gives relief around the country to victims of hurricanes, floods, tornadoes and other disasters.

"I’d have to say this is the first time in our history that we've ever done a disaster in our own back yard," said Kevin Cox, the CEO and founder of Hope Crisis Response Network.

Hope Crisis also found an architect from Warsaw to help rebuild. She's volunteering her time. Once the congregation comes back to its worship site in about 10 months, it will come back to a one-story building that looks much different than the previous one.

"It's times like this that you really see the goodness in America again and the goodness in people," said Cox

"The church will come together again,” Russ Maples told WSBT News. “It's not split; we're still together."

They’re holding on to the faith, the hope and the promise of "New Beginnings."

The demolition process should be completed by Friday.
