(WSBT) Some students in Elkhart County held their own fundraiser to benefit the victims of the tornado in Nappanee.

Kids at Millersburg Elementary learned the value of helping out neighbors.

Wednesday morning a check was presented to Linda Nelson from the Elkhart County chapter of the Red Cross.

The money was raised by the students in a collection drive that was called “Heaven Cent.”

Students, many of them Amish, collected coins for a fund that will go to help people in Nappanee who were victims of the tornado.

"We talked a lot about helping other people, and the life skill of helping others and doing the right thing,” explained teacher Leslie Tinsley. “The first day we had just a little over $200. So we were thinking, maybe a thousand. But to reach over $2,000 was awesome!”

As part of the project, students learned what a tornado is.

“It’s a big wind that can pick up almost anything,” said kindergartner Cameron Woolf. “But it’s from a really strong storms.”

For the students it was also a lesson about the importance of giving and helping out neighbors, even if they were people the kids didn't know who lived miles away.

“I thought it was fun and I really liked it because I knew we were helping people,” said fifth grader Demi Lockwood.

“Well I just felt very good that we could help a lot of people that were in danger,” said student Jeremy Cross.

"I just felt that we could really, just get together, and just do all this stuff, and I thought it was very awesome that we could help Nappanee,” said student Taylor Graber.

The students raised nearly $3,000 for the tornado victims.
